Legion Branch 78 continues long tradition of support for Meals on Wheels

A supporter of the Meals on Wheels program for the full 31 years meals have been been offered in Prince Edward County, Branch 78 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Picton has once again made a significant donation to support the wellbeing of seniors living in this community. On hand to present a cheque for $1,500.00 from the Poppy Fund was Mike Slatter, Branch 78 and Zone Officer and Member of the Poppy Committee; and Ted Taylor, Past Zone Commander of F3 and President of Branch 78 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Picton.

Upon accepting the cheque, Barbara Lyons, President of The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association said "we are so grateful for the long standing support of the Picton Legion volunteers. They have delivered Meals on Wheels and supported the program financially for years." "The annual donation to Meals on Wheels has been made to Prince Edward Community Care for at least 20 years" added President Taylor.

"We support veterans and seniors, along with children and youth, through the Poppy Fund" said Taylor. "We also support the Air, Army and Sea Cadets" added Slatter.

The Legion welcomes new members. There are three categories of membership: ordinary members who are current or past military; associate members who are family of military people; and affiliate members who can be interested community members. For more information on Legion membership or about their extensive loan cupboard of assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, bath aids, etc.) call Legion Branch 78 at 613-476-3648.

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association was established in 1977 and began delivering Meals on Wheels 3 years later. Besides Meals on Wheels the agency offers other services such as transportation to medical appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care, help with forms, respite, home maintenance, rural route reassurance and telephone reassurance programs. The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts, such as Community Care's Thrift Shop at 281 Main Street.
