Community Care volunteers recognized for years of service at Ontario Volunteer Service Awards
Each year, the Government of Ontario invites not for profit organizations to nominate six volunteers to be recognized for their long and dedicated service. Prince Edward Community Care proudly submitted the names of six outstanding individuals. If we could, we would nominate all 400 incredible volunteers who help us support seniors to live at home. On July 12th, the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards were held at the Ramada Inn in Belleville.
Among those recognized for their years of service to Community Care were:
Marilyn MacDonald, who has generously volunteered for over 20 years in various roles including delivering Meals on Wheels, supporting the Thrift Shop, and assisting with Congregate Dining. When asked why she volunteers, she says “I lived with seniors most of my life and saw the kind of things they needed. Community Care helps seniors and that’s why I wanted to volunteer with the organization”.
Linda King – 20 years delivering Meals on Wheels and the Thrift Shop. “I started volunteering delivering meals with our church. It seemed like a good role. A friend who volunteered at the Thrift Shop suggested I volunteer there too. I’ve been a cashier for several years. I volunteer once a week. As a caregiver for my husband this allows me to get out of the house and have time for me.”
Pauline Joicey – 20 years delivering Meals on Wheels and Income Tax volunteer. “We moved from Ottawa where I was volunteering and wanted to continue in the County. When we lived in Ottawa my father needed support, and I saw the benefits which made me want to volunteer with seniors. That is why I volunteer for Community Care for Seniors.
Lynn & Dave Edward – 20 years delivering Meals on Wheels and Tag Day. “As a member of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Lynn became the Auxiliary Coordinator of Meals on Wheels for Community Care every September and we’ve both participated in Tag Day for a number of years. We feel very fortunate, and like the idea of giving back to our wonderful community. One becomes friends with the clients, and often it is a reciprocal connection”.
Pat Fox – 20 years delivering Meals on Wheels. “I started with St. Gregory’s Church helping to deliver hot meals with another friend. We did that for a long time. I like to help and someday I may need the assistance.” Pat has also volunteered making wellness calls to seniors during the pandemic and gives their time at the annual Seniors Active Living Fair.
Each volunteer was presented with a lapel pin and a certificate to recognize their commitment and dedication as a volunteer.
