There won't be a squeegee in sight, but on Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17, the people standing on corners and at storefronts in Picton, Bloomfield and Wellington would like the public to hand over some spare cash. The beneficiaries will be senior citizens.

On those two days, volunteers will be offering tags on behalf of Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors to raise funds for its activities, helping senior citizens to live independently in their homes.

Community Care for Seniors is a non-profit organization partially funded by the provincial government, but its 600 volunteers bring in much needed money through such fund-raising activities as the annual tag days, Christmas bake sales and the art auction. The balance of the organization=s funding comes from annual personal and business memberships.

In recent years, county residents have been generous to the extent of $3,000+ on tag days, an amount that goes a long way toward helping with the provision of Meals on Wheels, driving clients to medical or other appointments.

Community Care volunteers have continued to donate their time to tag day duty over the past years. Wellington tag day co-ordinator Audrey McDermott estimates that the accumulated hours of this year's taggers since 1993 would be 80 -- and that's only about 10 long-term faithful volunteers.

They don't accost people on the street, nor do they wash windshields. They will offer you a tag, if you wish to donate.
