Community Care's Thrift Shop
As we open in the new location on April 1'st, 2014, we want to thank:
- All our amazing volunteers who helped every step of the way, even working 7 days a week and into the evenings to get the store ready for April 1'st. We have the best volunteers in the world!
- Calvin Thomas, former owner of Giant Tiger, who helped lay out the store, set up the displays and shelving, and make the merchandise look amazing, he's tireless!
- Prinzen Ford for loaning us their covered trailer for the move
- Dave Sly from County Clean Up Crew for volunteering to help with the move
- Mike Payette, owner of Giant Tiger in Picton for donating racks and shelving
- Laverne Bailey and his staff for moving the clothing and tending to the garbage
- Debbie Manlow, the Community Care staffer who led the move and kept it all together
Background on Community Care's Thrift Shop:
- Community Care first opened a Thrift Shop at 281 Main Street in August of 2002
- At first the shop had only housewares and a few clothes
- The clothing section on the second level at 281 Main was opened in 2006
- In the fall of 2013 the clothing was moved temporarily to 165 Main Street
- On March 1, 2014 Community Care took possession of the 4,000 square foot building at 153 Main Street, the old bowling alley
- The volunteers worked tirelessly for 4 weeks to ready the new space, set up the new shelves and displays, and then to move all of the goods and clothing from the two other locations
- They were determined to be ready for the April 1'st opening
- The front of the building will be refurbished in the spring
- Everyone who works in the Thrift Shop is a volunteer
- Everything we sell has been donated by residents of Prince Edward County
- 100% of the funds raised at The Thrift Shop stay in Prince Edward County to help seniors live at home
What's next?
- There's lots of room for more volunteers; call the Community Care office to get involved
- Donations of good used items are most welcome
The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association offers services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation to medical appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care, help with forms (including Income Tax), respite, home maintenance, rural route reassurance and telephone reassurance programs. The agency is only partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts, such as Community Care's Thrift Shop, now at 153 Main Street in Picton.
