A celebration of seniors

Recognizing the valuable contribution the agency has made to the lives of seniors in Prince Edward County, a certificate of congratulations was presented on behalf of Leona Dombrowsky MPP Prince Edward-Hastings to Prince Edward Community Care.

The agency helps seniors live at home and has carried out this work in Prince Edward for 33 years.  Now the reach has extended to all parts of Southeastern Ontario with the Home At Last (HAL) program, managed regionally by the agency.  HAL helps seniors make the transition from hospital to home, providing both transport and settling-in services for older people discharged from any hospital in South East Ontario. Fully funded by the South East Local Health Integration Network, this is one of three "transition from hospital to home" regional initiatives that Prince Edward Community Care is involved in.

L-R: Dave Wilson, Special Assistant to Leona
Dombrowsky MPP presents a certificate of congratulations
to Ken Noble, chair of the board of Prince Edward
Community Care for Seniors.  Mr. Wilson noted the work
and the achievements, and the great group of people -
both staff and volunteers - who work at Community Care.

October is Community Support Services Month in Ontario. Community Support Services help people live at home. A range of services - including Meals on Wheels® - help people maintain, or regain their independence so that they can continue their full lives as citizens, volunteers, consumers, taxpayers and voters.  The frozen Meals on Wheels program is growing as more and more seniors find benefit in these tasty, nutritious and low sodium meals.  Clients of the frozen meal program say "the assistance from Community Care has allowed me to stay at home independently" and "I like the communication and delivery, thank you very much. I am 83 years old and I appreciate your help."  A person was overheard at the Open House, saying how much help the frozen meals can be.

October 1 of every year is declared by the United Nations as the International Day of Older Persons. Chair of Community Care's board says "Community Care supports the efforts of the federal government to designate a day to celebrate seniors - October 1'st each year."  This is the day designated to be Canada's National Seniors Day in Bill C-40, An Act to establish National Seniors Day, which was recently passed by the House of Commons.

Many joined in the celebration on Friday, October 1st enjoying cake, coffee, and learning from the displays.

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association services include Meals on Wheels®, escorted transportation to medical and other appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care clinics, help with forms, rural route reassurance/telephone reassurance programs, home maintenance and respite programs.  The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts.
