Picton ON - Over 150 people crowded Rotary Hall at the Picton fairgrounds the evening of October 12th to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association.

“ We’re pleased to have so many members of the community join us to celebrate our 40th year,” says Debbie MacDonald Moynes, the Executive Director of the organization. “ We wanted to share our anniversary evening with the many people who have served as board members, volunteers, staff, donors and supporters over the decades helping the organization to meet the needs of seniors. We owe our success to their efforts.”

Prince Edward County has one of the highest populations of seniors in Canada. They are a vital part of community life contributing to many volunteer agencies. Assisting them to remain active members of their community and to live independently at home is the central mission of The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association.

The organization was founded in 1977 as a pilot project to identify new ways of delivering key services to seniors through volunteer agencies. Four decades later, Meals on Wheels, foot care, volunteer driving, social and recreational programs, reassurance programs, and caregiver support services are assisting County seniors to live active, independent lives in their homes. Through a partnership with Canada Post and The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, the agency has developed a service called the Rural Route Reassurance Program that provides a sort of “neighbourhood watch” over seniors as part of their mail delivery.  It also operates a Thrift Shop in Picton as a business supporting its fundraising efforts.

All of this is made possible by a small, dedicated staff and a strong network of over 500 enthusiastic volunteers.
